The Modern West Started In The South

It's important to remember the huge migration caused by the end of the Civil War - enmasse.

Think of Blackwater, finally confronted with actual charges of crimes against humanity, picking up - with all their extensive armory - and moving to parts 'unknown to law enforcement'........

That's a good analogy.

Newsweek is pretty thorough in this week's piece

"The Mind of the South: Southern Discomfort"

"What the Black brothers call "the most spectacular example of partisan realignment in modern American history" came about because of the GOP's "Southern strategy," which dates back to Dwight D. Eisenhower and culminated in the re-election of Ronald Reagan in 1984. The idea was to appeal to the South's newly prosperous suburb-dwellers while using unsubtle talk about "states' rights" and "quotas" to touch nerves earlier galvanized by unreconstructed racists like Alabama Gov. George Wallace."
